The Sheriffs at Old Bailey
Dinner with the Sheriffs at Old Bailey
on 14th February 2020
Welcomed by invitation from Alderman & Sheriff Professor Michael Mainelli and Sheriff Christopher Hayward CC for the final event of the current Chairman's year, the Club was privileged to dine in the Judges' Dining Room at the Old Bailey on Friday February 14 - so a special Valentine's evening was celebrated by everyone.
From the moment 52 guests arrived at the Lord Mayor's entrance, the evening went by far too swiftly. Everyone enjoyed very much the comprehensive tour led by our former Chairman, Sheriff Christopher Hayward CC. He went to an immense amount of trouble to ensure that everyone had the opportunity to visit the Courts, see the old part of the Bailey and that which was restored after the bombing and of course the cells!
Then, upstairs to have a welcoming drink and into dinner. The Chairman, Roger Walsh in his opening remarks said that those at the far ends of the table looked a very long way away and our President followed up with one of his usual witty and pertinent introductions. In the middle of a splendid dinner, Sheriff Christopher Hayward and Deputy Keith Bottomley serenaded the Chairman's wife Pearl, their words being greeted with lengthy applause.
Past Chairman Archie Galloway OBE, now the Club's senior active Past Chairman, thanked the Chairman for such a special ending to his year and everyone again applauded the Sheriffs and their wives for this invitation to their home during this year.
