The Lord Mayor's Show:
On Saturday 9th November 2019, representatives from Broad Street Ward Club took part in the Lord Mayor's Show by walking alongside our most recent affiliation - the City of London Sea Cadets (see further information by clicking here).
BSWC Committee Member, Commander James Nisbet, RNR, London Area Officer for the Marine Society and Sea Cadets, was joined by Sarah Sturrock, Lisa Preuveneers and Catriona Boyd. Lunch was taken with the Worshipful Company of Management Consultants (who also walked alongside the Sea Cadets), the Beadle is shown in a number of photos below and took good care of our walkers. The Presentation of Addresses:
The new Lord Mayor (Alderman William Russell) was sworn into his term of Office during The Silent Ceremony held at Guildhall on Friday 8th November. As always, this ceremony was followed by the giving of gifts and keepsakes to the new Lord Mayor and the Sheriffs, by various organisations with which they have an individual and particular affinity. This historic tradition takes place in the Art Gallery of Guildhall and is called The Presentation of Addresses.
Members will know that both Sheriffs for 2019-2020 are long standing members of Broad Street Ward Club, so the Committee was delighted to attend and present gifts on behalf of Members to Club President, Sheriff Professor Michael Mainelli (Alderman) and Past Chairman, Sheriff Chris Hayward CC.
Following the gift presentations, a brief reception for the gift-givers and receivers was held in the Old Library. Shown below are a few pictures from the event (click on an image to expand and scroll through):

Broad Street secures both Sheriffs
At Common Hall on 24th June 2019, the two Sheriffs for the coming year were elected. The Aldermanic Sheriff will be Broad Street Ward Club President and Alderman for the Ward, Professor Michael Mainelli and the non-Aldermanic Sheriff will be Past Chairman of the Ward Club and Common Councilman for the Ward, Chris Hayward CC. It was particularly pleasing that Chris secured his vote by a resounding 72%.
Congratulations to Michael and Chris, we wish them well for their year in Office, which will begin on 27th September 2019.
Shown below is the full Civic Team for the Ward with the two Sheriffs-Elect; Past Chairman, Deputy John Bennett MBE; and Past Chairman and Immediate Past Chief Commoner John Scott CC.
New Affiliation for Sea Cadet Corps
On the balmy evening of July 9th, Immediate Past Chief Commoner and Past Chairman John Scott CC, Immediate Past Chairman Jonathan Hindle and Past Chairman Martin Samuel, together with Honorary Secretary Judith Rich, were present at the Royal Naval Parade for the newly affiliated Sea Cadet Unit: The City of London Sea Cadet Corps, on board HMS Belfast.
Having watched the Parade and a display of some of the activities of the cadets during their training period and also the presentation of certificates, attendees were welcomed by BSWC Committee Member: Commander James Nisbet RN, and the President of the Sea Cadets Charity: Alderman The Right Honourable The Lord Mountevans. They were entertained afterwards in the Wardroom along with other guests, including the Master and Clerk of the Worshipful Company of International Bankers - which is also affiliated to the Corps.
New Year Honours
The Broad Street Ward Club offers it’s hearty congratulations to Deputy and Ward Councillor John Alfred Bennett for the Award of an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours for his services as Chairman, Board of Governors, Guildhall School of Music and Drama and for services to the City of London and Education.
Members will remember that John is a past Chairman of the Club (2007-2008) and served as Chief Commoner for the year 2014-2015.
Chairman of Broad Street Ward Club Jonathan Hindle presents Club member Sheriff Liz Green with a gift to mark her appointment (November 2018). Also attending are Past Chairman, Deputy John Bennett MBE and Honorary Secretary, Judith Rich OBE.
Club Chairman Jonathan Hindle and Honorary Secretary Judith Rich were guests of the Rt. Hon. The Lord Mayor, Alderman Charles Bowman, on 4th September for the Countdown Breakfast to City Giving Day 2018 at Mansion House.
The Broad Street Ward Club is a registered participant in the City Giving Day (to be held on 25th September 2018). In support of that fundraising initiative (part of the Lord Mayor's Appeal), BSWC committee members Lisa Preuveneers and Sarah Sturrock have organised a Ward Walk - see above right for further details on the event and a link to the event-page for booking information.

The Annual Inter Wards Quiz Night

It was an excellent evening – well organised, with good questions and a very nice supper in the beautiful Painters’ Hall. Two teams were entered from Broad Street Ward Club, both landed nicely in the middle. Here is a chart showing final results - click on it to expand:
The Broad Street Ward Mote
at Drapers' Hall
on Wednesday 21st March 2018
The Ward Mote is an annual meeting attended by Ward Electors, giving them an opportunity to ask questions of and make comment to the Alderman, Ward Clerk and members of Common Council.
Broad Street Ward Club was recently delighted to present the Honorary Clerk of the Ward of Broad Street (Mr Adrian Smallwood) with an official gown, which he wore for the first time at the Ward Mote held at Drapers’ Hall on Wednesday 21st March 2018.
Also present, and shown below, are The Club's President and Alderman for the Ward of Broad Street, Michael Mainelli, Deputy John Bennett, Chris Hayward CC and John Scott CC. The Ward Beadle, Mr George Martin, was of course on hand to open/close the meeting and keep good order.

The Annual Interwards' Quiz Night was held at St. Botolph's Church Hall on Wednesday 13th September 2017.
The Quiz was won by Queenhithe Ward who will be organising next year's event. The BSWC team managed a very creditable 7th place (out of 12 teams).
Our Ward Might was held on Wednesday 11th May, 2016 and was kindly hosted by our friends at the Dutch Centre, Austin Friars.
Of many items discussed was the outline by Mr Russell Taylor concerning the proposal to erect a statue of his well-known,much loved by city brokers, character 'Alex' somewhere within the ward.
A copy of his proposal is added below and all Ward members are encouraged too read it.
This Annual Inter-Ward Quiz was won last time by Lime Street Ward Club so they organised it this year. It was held in the Church Hall of St Botolph's Bishopsgate.
Wednesday September 9th 2015
September 9th saw two teams from the Broad Street Ward Club enter the annual Wards Club Quiz night, held at St Botolphs Church Hall. The evening started lively, thanks to the excellent Quiz questions being tabled by the Club’s very own President, Alderman Michael Mainelli, I am not surprised if a T.V. show does not come in for him!!
The evening became more and more competitive and boisterous with a definite competitive edge creeping in, but things calmed down at the interval which provided Fish and Chips or sausage and chips. I am very pleased to say that team; 'Broadstreet 1', captained by myself, came in 9th place, but a big shout must go out to team: 'Broadstreet 2' , captained by Catriona Boyd, which came a creditable 6th. The quiz was won by the Team from Billingsgate.
A fabulous and fun evening was had by all.
