About the Club

Many of the Wards have formed Ward Clubs, some of which have been in existence for many years, Broad Street Ward itself has a long history. Allowing for boundary changes, it has over the years contained within its borders The Bank of England, The Stock Exchange, The Royal Exchange and four Livery Companies. It also boasts among its historic Aldermen perhaps the most famous of all Lord Mayors of the City of London, Sir Richard Whittington (1354-1423), four times Lord Mayor and commonly held to be the inspiration for the pantomime character Dick Whittington.

It may be considered surprising therefore that, although Broad Street Ward has existed for so long, it's Ward Club as it stands today was not formed until October 1976 at a meeting at Carpenters' Hall. This was presided over by the Ward's then Alderman and former Lord Mayor of the City of London, Sir Hugh Wontner and also present were a number of like-minded, enthusiastic individuals, some of them Common Councilmen, many of whom retain an interest in the Club to this day.

By tradition, the Ward's Alderman is the Club's President and we are honoured in this capacity to have another former Lord Mayor (2007-2008), Alderman Sir David Lewis MA, as our current President.
